February 7, 2009 CARE TO KNIT hosts a Knit In
We donated 30 blankets made from over 403 squares!

Nancy Johnson, Betty Volpe and Linda Windsor chair the first Knit In on Long Island. Adults and children came to knit and crochet blanket squares. The finished blankets will be donated locally to the Family Service League and the Winthrop Pediatric Cancer Center. They are pictured here with Ines Basso Glick, Executive Director of CARE TO KNIT and Ivy Greenburg, Board Chair of CARE TO KNIT.

Two local knitting groups, The Heartwarmers (led by Nancy Johnson and Linda Windsor) and The Needlers (led by Betty Volpe) displayed their finished blankets hanging in the back. On the stage were the raffles and information about knitting shops. A Show & Tell of finished projects by our knitters was featured on the table.

Local knitting shops supported this event. We want to thank Three Black Sheep in St. James, Knitting on the Lamb & the Knitting Corner in Huntington, Knitters Therapy in Northport, and Infinite Yarns in Farmingdale for helping us advertise.

Three Black Sheep even organized their knitters to make squares and will be donating a finished blanket. Knitters Therapy kindly donated items to our raffle.

At one time we had over 80 people knitting and crocheting the blanket squares. During the Knit In we had three demonstrations – An Adventure with Cables, Creating a Project with the Drop Stitch, and How to Fix Your Mistakes. A special thank you to our advanced knitters for sharing their expertise.

A group of knitters volunteered to come and sew together the squares. They worked all day and left with 7 blankets to finish. A special thank you to these women.

Needlers began knitting and crocheting before the event. Four completed blankets were donated that day. We had fun at the Knit In and celebrated as each square was finished by ringing a bell. All totaled, so far – we have 403 squares!! How thrilling is that. The work is not finished. We must sew those squares together. So far, we have 11 finished blankets!! It is amazing what a community can do when given the challenge.

Here are some of the finished blankets for all to see. The boys and girls that
receive them are sure to feel the love that went into creating them.
